CALL OUT FOR SUBMISSIONS: Letters To… An Inspiring Woman

Today we are putting a call out for submissions for the latest instalment of our Letters To… creative writing series. In celebration of Black History Month, Stellar Quines is inviting people who identify as Black, Asian, Latinx, Indigenous, People of Colour, biracial, have mixed heritage (we use BIPOC+ to refer to these identities in place of Black Asian Minority Ethnic) to write this letter.  Stellar Quines will be awarding £100 to the writer of the chosen letter.

You may have an inspiring woman in mind you want to write to, perhaps she’s someone you’ve never met. You could be inspired by the formidable Tarana Burke’s empowering #MeToo movement or Allyson Felix breaking Usain Bolt’s world record. Or perhaps you want to share some insights into a woman who inspires you every day. Your inspiration could come from anywhere! Please bear in mind that this Letters To… call out and film are in celebration of Black History Month and so we encourage your letter to be to someone BIPOC+. They could be an inspiring woman from our past or perhaps an inspiring womxn who is making history now.

Letters can be from 1 word to 500 words for this instalment of our Letters To… series in which we select one letter, film it with a professional actor and share it with the world. The film will be directed by Apphia Campbell.

The deadline is Monday 12th October at noon so get writing!

We have had a tremendous response to our previous call outs – please share this with anyone you know who might be interested. Our Letters To… opportunity welcomes submissions from people of any gender, from anywhere in the world.  We are committed to supporting a diversity of voices for our opportunities and this call out is aimed at BIPOC+ people.

For inspiration, watch our latest films.

I’ve never written anything like this before, can I enter?

Yes absolutely. We would love to get letters from people who’ve never written before.  Letters To… is for letter writers, whatever their experience.

When is the deadline?

Monday 12th October, at noon.

How do I submit?

Contact Rosie on rosie@stellarquines.co.uk if you have any questions about the application.

Alternatively, you can send an audio recording to the email address. Don’t worry about the quality of your performance. We’re interested in what you’re saying, not how you’re saying it. Or you can send a written letter to: Letters to…, Stellar Quines, 30B Grindlay Street, Edinburgh EH3 9AX.

What happens once I submit?

Stellar Quines and Apphia Campbell will select one letter that we find particularly interesting or inspiring. The film will be shared online (on Stellar Quines’ website and social media) at the end of October.
