Stellar Quines is aware of what a precarious and pertinent moment in history we are living in, together, globally. With this in mind, we wanted our ‘Letters to…’ project to be addressed to those who most need support at this moment in time. Therefore, we are asking you to write a letter to one of the following themes:
- Letters to…the NHS
- Letters to… a woman in a shelter
- Letters to… a woman I miss during lockdown
- Letters to… hope
Letters can be from 1 word to 400 words and should address one of these themes. We will select four letters, film them with professional actors and then share them with the world. Supported by Pitlochry Festival Theatre for the first time, we will be working with three brilliant creatives: Caitlin Skinner, Amy Liptrott and Shilpa T-Hyland to direct the work.
These four letter themes have been inspired by the astonishing work of The Fawcett Society during COVID-19 with their continuous assertion that the voices and experiences of women and girls should not be silenced and need platforms to be heard.
All four of these letter themes have space for you to write to a woman you know, or to a woman you don’t. Your letter could be a call for resilience, a much needed beacon of hope to someone, or an intimate letter describing your own experiences – the possibilities are endless.
The deadline is Wednesday 27th May at noon so get writing!
We had a tremendous response to our six previous call outs – please share this opportunity with anyone you know who might be interested.
We welcome applications from people of any gender identity, from anywhere in the world.
What do I have to do?
Write a letter to either the NHS, a woman in a shelter, a woman you miss during lockdown or to hope. Letters should be designed to be read aloud by one person.
What kind of thing are you looking for?
Your letter can take any style you like. You may want to keep things simple or create something more poetic. You may want to rant, or it may take the form of a love letter. The choice is yours.

I’ve never written anything like this before, can I enter?
Yes absolutely. We would love to get letters from people who’ve never written before. Letters to… is open to everyone from anywhere, whatever their experience.
When is the deadline?
Wednesday 27th May at noon.
How do I submit?
Submit your letter in a word doc. or PDF format to firstname.lastname@example.org, including information on:
- Your name
- Contact information
- Include our Equalities Monitoring Form with your application
Alternatively you can send an audio recording of your letter to the email address. Don’t worry about the quality of your performance. We’re interested in what you’re saying, not how you’re saying it.
What happens once I submit?
Rosie from Stellar Quines will select the letters that she finds particularly interesting or inspiring. We will email everyone who submitted to let you know if your letter has been selected or not. Each chosen letter will be performed by a professional actor, directed by Shilpa T-Hyland, Caitlin Skinner or Amy Liptrott, and filmed. The films will be shared online across Stellar Quines’ website and social media on June 8 2020.
