Jemima Levick on why she is excited to direct This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing

This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing… is massively exciting for Stellar Quines. It’s absolutely a story for our times. It’s universal in its themes and concerns – and well, surely we need to grab all the opportunities we have available to us to encourage young people not to be afraid of the world and of different experiences.

Kruckemeyer has created a hugely imaginative, sometimes challenging story, which really demands us as theatre makers to use everything we’ve got to make the production work. In a world dominated by recorded media, creating believable, engaging theatre is even more of a challenge. But, all the more important. I really believe that our imaginations and our capacity for stories will take us far further than technology ever can. They are infinite, after all.

I’m especially excited about our partnership with Imaginate, and all the young people we’re headed out to meet across Scotland. In my experience they make brilliant audience members – when they like it, they really go on the journey with you. It’s hugely important for Stellar Quines to engage with new audiences, particularly the girls and boys who will be our next generation of audiences and theatre makers. With This Girl… we want to inspire and empower them, to ignite their interest in theatre, to engage with us in the long term and to experience theatre where women are as strong, clever and adventurous as they are everyday.
