On Sunday 9 June the 11th Annual Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS) 2013 was held at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh. The CATS celebrate the best achievements in Scottish theatre, and this year their 10th anniversary coincided nicely with the Traverse’s 50th.
Despite the brilliant sunshine, at 3pm the Traverse Bar was crowded with theatregoers and professionals sipping sparkling wine and chatting until the ceremony began shortly after 4pm.
This year Joyce McMillan hosted alongside special guest presenter, playwright and artist John Byrne, and together they announced the winner of each of the 10 categories, with a total of 26 productions up for an award.
At Stellar Quines we were particularly excited as we were nominated in two categories for our production of The List; for Best Female Performance (Maureen Beattie) and Best Production, which we took home! Including Joyce, the judging panel was 13 strong, and with so many fine productions to be up against we were thrilled and honoured to win Best Production.
While accepting the award, Stellar Quines’ Artistic Director, Muriel Romanes, said of The List:
“…what we tried to do with The List was to make it a simple and effective piece of work … sometimes making it simple makes it even more effective, and maybe we proved that a little bit.”
After the ceremony, the party continued in the Bar for a lavish celebration of the Traverse’s 50th birthday.
