Stellar Quines presents ANA in 3D – a first for theatre and film
Stellar Quines is proud to be the first theatre company that has recorded a live performance of a theatre production in 3D.
The first cinema screening of this unique recording will take place on Saturday 8 June at 1pm at Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA), 152 Nethergate, Dundee, DD1 4DY. This screening will be the first time a 3D recording of a Scottish theatre production has hit the cinema screen.
This event is free and open to the public. It’s a chance to be part of theatre and film history and to let us know what you think. Tickets are available from DCA’s box office: tel 01382 909 900 www.dca.org.uk
Background to the project
Can 3D film offer an artistic and commercially viable experience of live theatre?
In March 2012 a performance of Stellar Quines’ production of ANA at Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre was filmed in 3D, making us the first theatre company in the UK to capture and digitise a live performance in this way. Born out of the increasing demand for access to live performance across media platforms, this project is the first step into what we hope will be closer collaborations between film and theatre companies in the future.
The project started with a feasibility study into 3D Projection Technology which was produced by Glasgow School of Arts’ Digital Design Studio and facilitated by the Scottish Centre for Enabling Technology (SCET), part-funded by Scottish Enterprise.
Stellar Quines then successfully applied for a Business Innovation Exchange Voucher with Edinburgh Napier University. This enabled Professor Robin MacPherson, Director of the Institute for Creative Industries to act as consultant on this project. Stellar Quines allocated some of our AmbITion (a change programme for the arts and cultural sector) funding towards this project which covered the production costs. The British Council in Québec have also financially supported this project and Dundee Contemporary Arts have encrypted the Digital Cinema Package which will facilitate the cinema screenings.
Stellar Quines commissioned Freakworks, a Leith based film and new media company and 3D experts to film and edit the live performance of ANA in 3D.
