"a real explosion of 21st-century theatrical energy, timely, well-crafted and unforgettable"Joyce MacMillan in The Scotsman 18 March 2008

The Unconquered
by Torben Betts

From March 2008, Stellar Quines Theatre Company is remounting its acclaimed production of Torben Betts’ award-winning play The Unconquered (Winner of Best New Play, Critics’ Awards for Theatre Scotland 2007).

Stellar Quines’ Artistic Director, Muriel Romanes, will direct an all-new cast in a production that will tour through the UK in March and April before heading off to Brits Off Broadway in New York in May 2008.

"The new cast find all the poetic glory in Torben Betts’ script"The Stage 14 March 2008

Playwright Torben Betts’ powerful poetic language, dark humour and provocative ideas build a fast moving story around a fiercely intelligent young girl and her relentless rejection of the establishment. When suddenly a people’s revolution breaks out and a mercenary soldier intrudes into the family home, the conflict between the regime and the unconquered girl explodes.

"A production of great power and resonance that takes Betts’ caricatured world and breathes life into it"The Stage 14 March 2008

“Quite brilliant and savagely, excruciatingly painful, funny… Torben Betts is just about the most original and extraordinary writer of drama we have… This play should be seen everywhere.” Liz Lochhead

“If there is hope in his drama, it is that things of beauty (in this case, Bett’s exquisite language) can still be forged in the darkness. If ever we needed proof that the artist to whom the playwright is closest is the poet, it is here.” Glasgow Sunday Herald*****
